SEXUAL ASSAULT IN THE NEWS
Over the past several months there have been a number of local and national incidents of hate violence. These include the Duke University Lacrosse team sexual assault case; sexual assaults in the Castro targeting gay men or individuals perceived to be gay; physical assaults in the Mission District on lesbians or those perceived to be lesbians; and school shootings of girls in Bailey, Colorado and in Lancaster Pennsylvania. And at the same time, we realize that sexual violence is generally perpetrated by someone who is part of the survivor's community and/or by someone familiar to the survivor. Of course, those incidents of sexual violence tend to be less revealed and receive less media attention.
What follows are links and information regarding local and national incidents of sexual/hate violence, including what communities are doing to confront and end such violence and support for survivors.
