San Francisco Women Against Rape trains sexual assault peer counselors three times a year. Our next training is October 1 - November 1, 2008. Applications for this training are due August 29th. Our trainings last for approximately 5 weeks, on Mondays & Wednesdays 5:30 - 9:00 pm and Saturdays 9:30 - 5:30p.m. Applications may be submitted at any time during the year to be considered for the training.
Multi-lingual/Multi-cultural volunteers are needed to provide Multi Lingual Access to services. $150 Stipend paid upon completion of MLAM training + $18-20/hr for services in languages other than English.
People of color, youth, transgender and genderqueer, immigrant, elderly, queer, working class, and differently-abled individuals are encouraged to apply for participation in our volunteer trainings. You must be 18 or over to apply. We have volunteer opportunities available in these areas:

Counseling Program
- Peer Counseling: Peer counselors staff the 24-hour hotline, conduct in-person counseling sessions, facilitate support groups, and counsel survivors in the hospital.
- Community Outreach: Volunteers table at events, distribute our materials to community centers, research, and keep our outreach center up to date.
- Presentations: Volunteers present on a range of topics from What Is Sexual Assault to Anti-Oppression. These presentations are given to youth and adults.
- Curriculum Development: Volunteers research and develop curriculum to be used in presentations.
- Special Events: Volunteers work on SFWAR special events like Dine for a Change and Artists Against Rape.
- Databases: Volunteers help us keep our databases up to date.
- Mailings: Volunteers help with mailings we send out a few times a year.
- Special Projects: Projects come up throughout the year.

Our volunteers constantly tell us that they grow enormously, both personally and politically,from the volunteer training and find the work to be tremendously important and rewarding.

Qualifications: Experience with and/or ability to: work well independently and within a team; complete basic office administrative tasks; be flexible; communicate well; learn and support others in developing a radical political analysis as the foundation for anti-violence, anti-oppression, social justice work; participate in on-going personal, interpersonal and institutional anti-oppression work.

Volunteers are an integral part of the organization and the backbone to many of our services. SFWAR has an average of 70 active volunteers at any given time. Trainings for volunteers, including rape crisis counseling certification, run approximately three times a year.
