Since 2005, Walk Against Rape has raised over $90,000 to provide vital services to survivors of sexual violence. Walk Against Rape is organized by San Francisco Women Against Rape (SFWAR) and held during Sexual Assault Awareness Month to inform communities about the painful and pervasive reality of rape. In the U.S., 1 in 4 women and 1 in 11 men will be raped in their lifetime. 61% of female rape victims are under age 18. Among adults with developmental disabilities, as many as 83% of women and 32% of men are the victims of sexual violence. In California, there has been a 3.1% increase in reported forcible rapes committed against senior citizens. In a study of gay men and lesbians, 52% reported at least one incident of sexual coercion by same-sex partners. 13-14% of transgender individuals report being victims of rape or attempted rape. 77% of completed rapes are committed by someone who is known to the victim. According to 2005 Crime Clock calculations, there is one forcible rape every 56 minutes in California. Finally, it is estimated that less than 20% of rapes are ever reported to the police. As you can see, sexual violence is an epidemic affecting us all. This means that if you are not a survivor, it is likely you know someone who is. We at SFWAR believe that only by joining together as a community can we confront sexual violence. Walk Against Rape stands as the embodiment of our communities mobilizing to support survivors and end rape!
Clearly one goal of Walk Against Rape is to raise awareness about the prevalence of sexual violence and to mobilize community members to end sexual assault. But, in addition, the Walk provides a space for survivors of sexual violence to heal through sharing their experiences and celebrating their resilience, educates communities about the resources available in the aftermath of an assault, raises money for SFWAR to continue providing vital crisis and prevention education services, and makes visible what has historically been silenced and invisible. With your help we can achieve these goals!
While, Walk Against Rape is a relatively new tradition in San Francisco, we have seen it grow each year. By becoming a sponsor this year, you join a growing group of people who have made raising awareness about rape a priority. Sponsors also enjoy exposure through various mediums of media. For example, sponsors are featured in Walk posters and brochures, online advertising, radio and TV public service announcements and press releases, Walk programs, stage banners, Walk Against Rape t-shirts, direct mail and e-letters, and on the San Francisco Women Against Rape website. You will also have the opportunity to address the Walk Against Rape crowd of participants and be provided table/vending space at the event.
Also, by sponsoring this year's Walk Against Rape, you become a leader in the movement to end sexual violence. The Walk is in its successful third year! SFWAR has now established Walk Against Rape enough to seek corporate, business, and individual support. We hope that you will be part of this very first group of corporate and business sponsors to support survivors of sexual violence and Walk Against Rape. Thank you for considering joining us in this movement and SFWAR extends our sincere gratitude for your efforts to end all forms of violence.
